Winter Solace
There is comfort in the cold,
in the way it demands honesty—
no pretense survives the frost.
I walk the empty streets
where summer crowds once gathered,
and find peace in the absence.
The trees stand bare,
their architecture revealed,
no longer hidden by the noise of leaves.
This is the season of seeing clearly,
of understanding what remains
when everything decorative has fallen away.
I breathe clouds into the night air
and watch them dissolve—
small offerings to the dark.
People speak of winter as death,
as something to endure,
a passage to brighter days.
But I have learned to love
this stripped-down world,
this honest cold that asks nothing but presence.
In spring, the world will bloom again,
and I will welcome it.
But tonight, I am grateful for the winter,
for the solace of the cold,
for the quiet reminder
that emptiness too can hold beauty.
